The Facts Behind Obama's Citizenship

There is a hot debate brewing currently about President Obama. It has been said that the President is not a "natural-born" citizen because both parents have to be U.S. citizens and his father is a citizen of Kenya. Obama is a citizen, but if he is not a "natural-born" citizen, should he have been ineligible to be President? The whole debate comes down to a very small word - "or." Article Two of the U.S. Constitution describes the requirements for the President. "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States." Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961.

A Texas Baptist church posted a sign doubting the President's citizenship. The church has been a polling place for 15 years and Democrats in the area are now challenging that status. The Maplewood Baptist's marquee read "Where's the Birth Certificate?"

In October, a deputy attorney general from Pennsylvania challenged Obama's qualifications. A supporter of Hillary Clinton, Philip Berg said that Obama was ineligible to be President because he was not a U.S. citizen. A district judge rejected the lawsuit. President Obama posted the 1961 Hawaii Certificate of Live Birth on his website. Berg said that he was disappointed with the decision and would bring the matter to the Supreme Court.

In July, the Hawaii Health Director said, "I...have seen the original vital records...verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen."
