Black Nationalist Churches and other Christian sects

There are a number of different Christian sects that are making news today. Some of them have been around for years, while others have popped up in recent times. Almost all of them mark their differences due to varied interpretation or the influence of historical trends.

Trinity United Church of Christ is one such church. While a lot of people are apprehensive about this sect, it is not that different from any other Christian sect that was built around an ethnic group or community. The basic beliefs of this church revolve around acknowledging the existence of God and dedication to leading a moral, ethical life. Given that the church was built around a particular ethnic group (i.e. there is a focus on African culture and acknowledgment of their heritage), it is not surprising that a few values revolve around educating the followers about their roots.

The Jehovah's Witnesses are one of the bigger Christian sects worth noting. They also share some of the general beliefs with other sects, like following a good moral code and proper conduct towards other human beings. Their main differences come from interpretation as opposed to culture-based focuses. To this effect, they consider allegiance to a flag as idolatry and blood transfusion to be bad.

The Southern Baptist Convention is a popular one that, unlike the TUCC, is region-specific. They also espouse general Christian belief (e.g. faith in one God, goodwill towards man, etc.) but there are a few differences. Unlike some of the stricter sects, they promote tolerance by acknowledgment and acceptance of other Christian sects. They call for greater oversight in schools and are also against same-sex marriages.
