Ponies are probably easier to lock into a time and place then people are. Margauerite Henry's books are more about the communities on the Barrier Islands in the 40's and 50's then anything else. Self reliant and self sufficient; Henry's book captures the essence and substance of a community that at it's core is American. A community that lack the dirt and filth that an urban community naturally creates, (yes Obama is very urban in this context).  And that, when you reflect is the biggest difference between Conservative and Liberal.
Liberals would see the community described in this book as backwards and deficient. People were not dependant on government, they were the government. Fire departments were volunteer, and people contributed to society because they chose to. Unions, Community Organizers, and Lawyers were not a part of this community, they were not welcome. Change occurred as needed, but not as demanded by a few elite. Liberals see this community as the part of America they want to destroy.
Conservatives, on the other hand, see this community as the part of America that is valuable and worth preserving. The individuals of this community enjoyed the freedoms, liberties and responsibilities inherent with the definition of an American. These people would not tolerate an invasive or incompetent government.
I never saw it as a child, but it is very clear now--Henry's books on the Barrier islands captured more than the story of a pony; they captured a portrait of America that is in jeopardy today. That portrait clearly defines the preservers and the destroyers in today's political debate. But the ponies are a good symbol of this difference. Environmentalists in the final stories advocated destroying the ponies as a non-native species, just as environmentalists from outside the Barrier islands are advocating today. That is the Liberal approach, destroy in the name of change regardless of what is lost. Liberals hate horses. Conservatives, respecting the beauty and nobility of free spirits want to preseve the ponies. They are horse crazy.
